We welcomed Jennifer Seymour, Community Engagement Network Lead and Lewis Holland, Physical Activity Specialist, both from Everyone Health. They offer a range of health and wellbeing services which are free of charge to residents and are funded by the county council.
The services include adult weight management, which is based around simple circuit training and is available at a range of centres. Falls prevention is a one to one service which considers falls hazards within the home. CamQuit helps people to stop smoking. Alcohol reduction does exactly what it says, working to reduce the amount of consumption.
Everyone Health also offer NHS health checks, many of which can be arranged out of hours. They also offer a mental health service with a wait time of typically just 2 weeks.
In response to questions it emerged that although everyone employed is fully trained to carry out these services, none are medically qualified.
Lewis then took us through the benefits of exercise, with the Government recommendation of 150 minutes per week. He recommended that this is done in small stages and varied for more interest. He also pointed out that resistance exercise burns more calories than aerobic exercise. Resistance bands are cheaply available online from the usual web sites.
